New church, new mission
Trinity-Grace United Church was founded in 2017 as the result of many like-minded, faithful and visionary people coming together at the right time. Trinity Grace United is truly a trinity as we have formed a partnership between three former congregations here in Vancouver: Trinity United, St. James United and Grace Memorial United. Each of these former churches have blended together to offer unique worship and friendship opportunities in the heart of Vancouver.
Building on arich history
Prior to 2017, and throughout its 108 year existence, the church at this location (originally Grace Methodist Church, then becoming Grace Memorial United in 1925) 108 was focused on feeding bodies and souls. From its early days hosting the first food bank in Vancouver to the current Community Breakfast ministry, Grace has always had a heart for Jesus’ ministry of table hospitality. Simply put, there is a strong tradition of welcoming strangers and neighbours to break bread together and to create spiritual community. Grace has always been drawn to church experimentation and innovation, and that tradition is still alive and flourishing today.
Creating new partnerships
Trinity United was created through an amalgamation between St. James United Church and Kitsilano United. Its mission focus was community ministry, particularly serving the poor and underserved and nurturing the LGBTQ community as an Affirming congregation. Trinity’s mission was rooted in responding to the neighbourhood in which it is situated. This led to Trinity providing space with an Anglican church and it then moved to Mount Pleasant where its predominantly LGBTQ members were living and working. Eventually, they were called to create the Heartwood Community Café - a continuation of the Rhizome Community Cafe. This space was repurposed for folks not comfortable in a traditional church setting and the café also hosted community events and collaborated with community members to organize and offer space for everything from book launches, board game nights, and unique spiritual explorations.
Teaming up to serve our community
Today, Grace and Trinity have joined hands and now have a shared vision of the ministry that is needed for the community we serve. We’re proud to offer a playgroup for local families and caregivers, an open mic/community coffeehouse, thrift store, a monthly brunch and weekly Bible Study, Sunday Service and much more to come.
